HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The No. 9 Hofstra University men's lacrosse team outscored North Carolina 5-0 over a span of 13:29 in the third and fourth quarters to rally past the Tar Heels 6-5 Wednesday night at James M. Shuart Stadium on the Hofstra University campus. John Keysor scored an unassisted goal for the Pride with 1:50 to play in the game to cap the five-goal rally that erased a 5-1 UNC lead the Tar Heels had carried into the final minute of the third quarter.
Nick Tintle led the Tar Heels offensively with two goals and freshman goalkeeper Grant Zimmerman had his best game in a UNC uniform as he made 11 saves while also causing four of Hofstra's 16 turnovers in the game.
Tom Dooley led the Pride offensively with two goals and one assist. Athan Iannucci had a goal and an assist for Hofstra and John Keysor also added a goal and an assist.
UNC got off to a 4-0 lead in the first half against the Pride, a team which last Saturday had defeated defending NCAA champion Johns Hopkins 11-6 at Shuart Stadium. Carolina went ahead on unassisted goals by Nick Tintle and Rob Driscoll in the first quarter as well as an unassisted goal by Sean Link with 10:23 left in the second quarter. When Tintle scored his second goal of the game off an assist by Bobby McAuley with 9:32 left in the second period the Tar Heels led 4-0.
However, UNC's offense would stall after that and UNC scored only one goal in the final 39:32 of the game.
Hofstra got its first goal with 1:26 left in the half as Iannucci tallied off an assist by Dooley.
UNC answered that goal with 8:20 left in the third quarter when Bart Wagner scored on a behind his back shot while lying on the ground after taking a pass from Ben Hunt, the first point of Hunt's Tar Heel career.
But Hofstra rallied back. Dooley scored with 19 seconds left in the third quarter and again with 13:46 left in the game to make the score 5-3. Tim Treubig cut the lead to 5-4 with a goal with 8:17 to play.
Hofstra tied the game on a goal by Rob Bonaguro with 2:41 to play off an assist by John Keysor. Keysor then scored the game winner 51 seconds later.
UNC had one more shot at the goal after winning the next face-off but Carolina was unable to get the equalizer and after regaining possession Hofstra was able to run off all but the final three seconds off the game clock before turning possession over to UNC. A potential tying shot was saved by Hofstra's Matt Southard but officials ruled the goal would not have counted anyway as the clock had already expired before the shot was taken.
Hofstra outshot Carolina 33-26 including 11-3 in the fourth quarter. Zimmerman turned back 11 Hofstra shots while Southard had five saves for Hofstra.
The Pride led in ground balls 30-24 and Hofstra had only 16 turnovers while the Tar Heels committed 24.
UNC did lead in the face-off circle by a 9-5 margin.
Carolina dropped its fifth in a row, its longest losing streak since UNC lost five in a row during the 1997 season. UNC Is now 2-5 on the season. The No. 9 Pride won its third in a row to improve to 3-1.
UNC will play its third successive road game, all in eight days, Saturday when the Tar Heels play at No. 3-ranked Duke at 3 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium. Hofstra travels to Princeton on Saturday.
