AUSTIN, Tex.-- Despite needing three more strokes than their first-round 310, the University of North Carolina women's golf team moved up two spots to sixth on a tough scoring day at the Betsy Rawls Invitational. Tough conditions at the University of Texas Golf Club caused only three schools in the 15-team field and none of the individuals in yesterday's top ten to improve on their day one totals.
One golfer who did find an easier road Saturday was Carolina sophomore Ann Laney. The Charlotte native posted a one-over 73 that included three birdies. Laney's card was tied for second-best on Day Two and allowed her to move into a tie for fifth place overall. Joining Laney in the top ten was junior Katie Miller. Miller, who struggled at times on Saturday, knocked in two pars and a birdie in her final three holes to finish with round two 81 and move back into the top ten. Freshman Lauren Hunt and Sophomore Collette Lowe each stayed steady for the team by shooting a 79 and 80, respectively, helping the team eclipse two squads to move into sixth.
Sunday Laney will be looking to gun down second-round leader Amanda Blumenhersty of Duke. Blumenherst shot a 74 Saturday to take the top spot from first-round leader Christa Spedding of Texas A&M who sits one shot back in second. Duke's Elizabeth Janangelo, who was the only golfer to shoot under-par on Saturday, is tied for third with Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll.
With two golfers each in the top five, it is no surprise that Duke and Texas A&M sit atop the leaderboard. Duke was able to remain constant by shooting a second-straight 302 to claim first place while Texas A&M added nine more shots to fall one stroke behind the Blue Devils. Purdue, Oklahoma State, and Southern Methodist close out the top five. The Invitational concludes Sunday with another 18-hole round at the University of Texas Golf Club.
