Chapel Hill ---- North Carolina wrapped up its seventh spring practice on Friday evening in front of over 300 high school and middle school coaches at the annual Carolina Football Coaches Clinic. The Tar Heels worked out for two hours in full pads under the lights at Kenan Stadium. Carolina has seven practices remaining before the Spring Game on Saturday, April 8 at 12 Noon.
"There is a lot of interest in this football program right now for the right reasons," said head coach John Bunting. "They got to see a lot of enthusiasm today. This program is buzzing. I see a defense running around. I see an offense that can make some plays."
Bunting was pleased with the progress of the offense at the mid-point of spring workouts and is looking forward to the continued development of Frank Cignetti's new scheme.
"Our main goals this spring are to install a new offense, find out what we have at running back behind Ronnie McGill and develop some young players tha can help us on special teams. I think we're doing a good job and hope that continues this spring.
The coaches have elected to hold McGill out of some drills, but today he had several good runs and was impressive in limited action.
"We know what Ronnie can do, but I was impressed with the way he ran today," said Bunting. "We turned him loose a little bit."
Several former Tar Heel standouts were also in attendance Friday, including All-Pro Detroit Lions cornerback Dre' Bly, Baltimore center Jason Brown, Indianapolis safety Dexter Reid and Pittsburgh deep snapper Greg Warren.
"It's great to have those guys out here supporting what we are doing," said Bunting.
