GREENSBORO, N.C. - After striking out a career-best 13 batters in seven shutout innings against No. 4 Georgia Tech last Friday, North Carolina junior left-hander Andrew Miller was named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday. The Gainesville, Fla., product has now earned the conference's weekly pitching honor three times in his career.
Against the Yellow Jackets, Miller allowed no runs on four hits and just one walk for his third shutout performance of six or more innings this season. Georgia Tech threatened in both in the second and fourth innings with two on and just one out, but Miller buckled down to strikeout the next two batters he faced to preserve the shutout. Miller did not allow a hit after the fifth, did not walk a batter after the second, struck out two batters in four separate innings and fanned the side in the fourth. The 13 strikeouts surpassed his previous career best of 12 against Arizona State March 4, 2005. Miller has fanned 10 or more batters in three of his last five starts and seven times in his career.
On the season, Miller is now 5-0 for the second year in a row. He owns a 1.58 ERA and has struck out 52 batters and walked just nine in 40 innings. Miller ranks among the ACC's top five in strikeouts per nine innings (first), wins (fourth), ERA (fourth), opponents batting average (fourth) and innings per start (third).
Miller is the second Tar Heel to earn ACC Pitcher of the Week honors this season. Classmate Daniel Bard claimed the award March 4.
