
Pennsylvania Takes Down North Carolina 13-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team trailed for less than two minutes on Tuesday night as the Quakers got a combined 10 goals from three players in order to defeat North Carolina 13-4 at Fetzer Field before a chilly crowd of 546 fans. The Quakers remained undefeated on the season at 3-0 while North Carolina has now dropped three matches in a row. The Tar Heels stand at 2-3.
Penn is ranked No. 20 this week by the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association while the Tar Heels are unranked. In the Inside Lacrosse media poll, UNC is ranked No. 20 while Penn is unranked.
Penn was led by an offense in which three players combined for 10 of Pennsylvania's 13 goals. James Riordan led the Quakers with four goals and he also recorded an assist. David Cornbrooks had three goals for the Quakers while D.J. Andrzejewski had three goals as well. J.J. Lian added two goals and an assist for Penn and Alan Eberstein had a goal and an assist.
Four different Tar Heels scored goals for UNC with Ryan Blair, Ryan Walterhoefer, Bobby McAuley and Ben Mark each scoring for Carolina. It was junior Ben Mark's first goal of his Tar Heel career and junior Sam Wagner had an assist on Mark's goal, the first career point for Wagner.
After Bobby McAuley scored an unassisted goal for the Tar Heels with 13:26 left in the first quarter, the Quakers tied the match 2:11 later on a man-up goal by D.J. Andrzewski with an assist by Alan Eberstein. An unassisted goal by James Riordan with 10:10 left in the first quarter gave the Quakers the lead for good.
Penn went on to lead the Tar Heels 4-2 at the end of the first quarter as Riordan had two of the Quakers' four goal in the opening quarter. The Quakers then ran off nine successive goals in the second and third quarter and the early stages of the fourth quarter to take their biggest lead of the game at 13-2 with 13:25 remaining. UNC scored two goals in the final 4:06 of play to cut Penn's final victory margin to nine.
The Tar Heels outshot the Quakers 34-27 in the match and Carolina also won 13 of 21 face-offs. Penn led in ground balls 30-26. Greg Klossner went the entire way in goal for the Quakers and he was credited with 11 saves. Three UNC goalkeepers combined to make five saves in the match.
The Tar Heels will seek to end their three-match losing streak when they travel to South Bend, Ind., Saturday to play the Fighting Irish (No. 12 USILA, No. 13 Inside Lacrosse) of the University of Notre Dame at 1 p.m.
