PINEHURST, N.C. - Freshman Lauren Hunt shot a 77 and junior Katie Miller fired a 78 in the first round of this year's ACC Championship, being played on Pinehurst No. 8, and helped the North Carolina women's golf team combine for a team score of 315 that put them in seventh place. Hunt and Miller were the only Tar Heel golfers to finish in the top 20.
Currently atop the leader board is Duke who built a lead of eight strokes after the first round over second place N.C. State and Florida State. Led by the first round leader Amanda Blumenherst, who carded a 69 on the first day, the Blue Devils placed three golfers in the top 10.
Blumenherst's round was the only under par score for the day at three under par. Two even par scores were turned in by Katie Trotter of Maryland and Carolina Westrup of Florida State and they both sit in a tie for second. A trio of golfers are currently in fourth after tallying a 74 on the first day. These golfers include Jennie Lee of Duke, N.C. State's Nancy Mountcastle, and Miami's Jessica Steward.
Following the lead of Hunt and Miller for the Tar Heels was another freshman, Sydney Crane. Crane finished with a 79 and currently sits one stroke behind Miller. Ann Laney finished with an 81, while Laura Caniff ended her first round with an 82. Carolina recorded only three birdies on the day due in part to the tough play of Pinehurst No. 8. Head Coach Sally Austin noted, "It was a disappointing day. This course is dangerous- especially around the greens and most of our shots were lost around the greens. We're looking forward to playing tomorrow."
The ACC Championship is also a Carlyle Cup event as one Carlyle Cup point will go out to either Duke or North Carolina depending on which team finishes higher in the tournament. The current Carlyle Cup standings are even with both schools having 10 points apiece.
The second round of this year's ACC Championship will be held on Saturday. Pinehurst No. 8 features a par 72, 6,293 yard layout and this year marks the first year that the tournament has ever been held in Pinehurst.
