CHAPEL HILL -- University of North Carolina juniors Jenn Cook and Kristen Hordy are among 21 candidates for the Tewaaraton Award, the nation's highest individual award in women's lacrosse, the Tewaaraton Award Foundation recently announced. The Tewaaraton Award Foundation will narrow the list to five finalists. The winner will be announced on June 1.
The Atlantic Coast Conference leads all conferences with 11 student-athlete nominations. Duke has four nominees (attacker Katie Chrest, goalkeeper Megan Huether, midfielder Rachel Sanford and attacker Kristen Waagbo). Virginia has three (attacker Tyler Leachman, midfielder Nikki Lieb and attacker Blair Weymouth). Maryland joins Carolina with two nominees (midfielders Delia Cox and Kelly Kasper). Duke's four nominees tied for the most nationally with Dartmouth, Georgetown and Northwestern.
Hordy leads the nation in save percentage at .565 and is third in the nation in goals allowed average at 7.20 per game, leading the ACC in both categories. In ACC games only, she leads the conference in save percentage and saves per game. Earlier this season, she recorded 15 saves vs. Duke, 16 vs. Virginia and 11 vs. Maryland. Hordy was a second-team Inside Lacrosse All-America in 2005 and is a strong candidate for similar honors this season.
Cook is one of the top defenders and all-around players in the nation, having earned first-team All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse last year. In ACC games this season, she is among the conference leaders in caused turnovers and draw controls.
