CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Top-ranked Virginia outscored North Carolina 6-1 in the opening quarter and built a margin the Tar Heels were unable to overcome as the Wahoos beat UNC 21-13 in men's lacrosse action before 2,366 fans at Fetzer Field.
The Virginia offense was balanced, led by a five-goal effort by Garrett Billings. Matt Poskay and Matt Ward each scored three goals for the Cavaliers and Danny Glading, Drew Thomspn and Will Barrow each scored two goals for the Cavaliers. Ten different Virginia players scored in the match.
North Carolina's scoring output was its second highest of the 2006 season, topped only by a 14-goal effort against Ohio State in the season opener. Eleven different Tar Heels scored in the game with Ryan Blair and Rob Driscoll each scoring two goals for Carolina. Defenseman Hayward Howard led the Tar Heels with two assists, the first time the senior co-captain has recorded multiple points in a game in his career.
UNC and Virginia both took 46 shots in the game and the Virginia led by one in ground balls at 44-43. The Cavaliers dominated the face-off circle 23-25 and had three extra-man goals while the Tar Heels were unable to score on their three opportunities.
Kip Turner and Bud Petiti combined to make 13 saves for the Cavaliers while Grant Zimmerman and Trey Sheain made 13. Sheain came on and played the last 39:34 of the game and had 10 of the saves. Turner had 13 of Virginia's saves.
The Cavaliers got off to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter with Will Barrow scoring twice for the Cavaliers in the opening 15 minutes. Virginia built a seven-goal lead with 9:34 left in the half after successive goals by Garret Billings, the Tar Heels scored four of the last six goals of the half and pulled within 11-6 at halftime/ Junior midfielder Ben Staines recorded his first career goal to cut the lead to 9-3 and start the run for UNC.
Rob Driscoll scored the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to 11-7 but Danny Glading answered with two goals for Virginia to increase the lead to 13-7. Carolina got back to within four goals one more time on a goal by Michael Burns assisted by Hayward Howard with 2:24 left in the third quarter.
Virginia then outscored the Tar Heels 5-1 over a span of a little over 10 minutes to put the game away as Kyle Dixon scored scored to make it a 19-11 goal with 5:23 to play. The teams then traded goals the remainder of hte way. Virginia had its biggest lead at 21-12 with 2:20 to go on an unassisted tally by Adam Fassnacht.
UNC will play its final home game of the 2006 season next Saturday at 12 p.m. at Kenan Stadium against Fairfield. The game will be the final home appearance for 13 seniors.
UNC fell to 2-9 with the loss, 0-3 in the ACC. Virginia is now 11-0 and 2-0 in the ACC.
