Browns Summit, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team played steady golf for the second consecutive round and stands in eighth place going into the final round of the NCAA East Regional. Carolina fired an eight-over-par 296 in each of the first two rounds for a 592 total, 16 strokes behind leader Louisiana State.
"I was pleased with our play," said Carolina head coach Sally Austin after the Tar Heels completed their second round. "We were consistent, we were calm and played real steady golf. I still think the best is yet to come."
The Tar Heels have picked a good time to play some of their best golf the year. The top eight teams and top two individuals not on those eight teams will advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 23-26 at the University Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Sydney Crane, a freshman from Jamestown, N.C., carded a three-over 75 after firing an even par 72 in the first round and is tied for 25th place with a 147 total. Junior Katie Miller, from Jeannette, Pa., posted a 76 for a 149 total and is in a tie for 35th place. Two Tar Heels are tied for 42nd place with 150 totals - Ann Laney, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., and Laura Caniff, a sophomore from Russell, Ky. Lauren Hunt came back strong in the second round firing an even par 72 after struggling with an 11-over 83 on the first day. Hunt, a freshman from Little River, S.C., is tied for 86th place with a 155 total.
Tennessee is just two strokes behind Louisiana State in the team race. Tennessee has a 578 total while Louisiana State leads the field of 21 teams with a 576 total. California stands in third place with a 583 total while Florida State is fourth at 586, Alabama is fifth at 588, Wake Forest is sixth at 589 and Arizona State is in seventh place with a 591 total, one shot ahead of the Tar Heels.
