The Carolina Women's Golf Team Finishes 10th At NCAA East Regional

Browns Summit, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team played another steady round of golf, but barely miss the cut for the NCAA Championship. The Tar Heels fired a nine-over-par 297 after two consecutive rounds of 296 for a 25-over 889 total to miss the cut by a mere two strokes. Virgina and Alabama concluded the 54-hole event deadlocked at 23-over and Alabama won the chance to advance to the NCAA Championship by winning the first hole of sudden death playoff.
Tar Heel freshman Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., fired a four-under 68 in the final round to finish with a 223 total and tied for 36th place along with teammate Ann Laney, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., who carded a 73 in the final round. Freshman Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., posted a 78 for a 225 total and tied for 45th place while sophomore Laura Caniff, from Russell, Ky., shot a 78 for a 228 total to tie for 69th place along with Katie Miller, a junior from Jeannette, Pa., who carded a 79 in the final round.
Teneessee finished atop the 21-team field with an even par 854 total after firing a two-under 286 in the final round. Louisiana State was the runner-up six strokes back at 870. California finished in third place at 874 while Florida State and Arizona State tied for fourth place with 878 totals, Auburn finished sixth at 879 and Wake Forest was seventh at 883. The top eight teams and the top two individuals not on those eight teams advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 23-26 at the University Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Marci Turner of Tennessee captured the individual title with a seven-under 209 total after firing a three-under 69 in the final round. Alissa Kuczka of Arizona State was the runner-up, two shots back at 211 after carding a four-under 68 in the final round. Wake Forest's Mandy Goins and Florida State's Caroline Westrup tied for third place with three-under 213 totals while Louisiana State's Caroline Martens finished fifth at two-under 214.
The 54-hole event was played at the tough Bryan Park Champions Course which features a par 72, 6,386-yard layout.
