CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ------ Ken Mack, who lettered at tailback from 1976-78 and was an assistant coach for the Tar Heels from 1996-99, will serve as the lead analyst for Carolina football broadcasts, network general manager Gary Sobba announced Tuesday. Mack, Director of Major Gifts for the Rams Club, replaces Rick Steinbacher who was recently named UNC's Associate Athletic Director for Marketing.
Mack played running back for coach Bill Dooley in 1976-77 and for Dick Crum in 1978. He was a member of Carolina teams which played in the 1976 Peach owl and 1977 Liberty Bowl. The Wayne County, N.C., native coached at Howard and Navy before joining George Welsh's staff at Virginia for 14 seasons. Mack returned to Chapel Hill in 1996 and coached four years under Mack Brown and Carl Torbush.
Mack tutored second-team All-ACC tailback and first-team All-ACC specialist Leon Johnson in 1996 and second-team All-ACC tailback Jonathan Linton in 1997.
"I'm ecstatic we were able to hire someone of Ken Mack's caliber," said Sobba, who is in his seventh year directing Carolina's multi-media efforts. "He has tremendous credentials as a former football player and coach and will add great insight to our broadcast team. Ken's experience, combined with an easy-going manner, will make for an enjoyable broadcast for all Tar Heel fans."
Mack joined the Rams Club after the 2000 season and will continue to serve as Director of Major Gifts.
"This is a great opportunity for me and it will be an honor to work beside Hall of Famer Woody Durham," said Mack. "It's every former player's dream to work in broadcasting and I'm just excited to be a part of the Tar Heel Sports Network. I was fortunate to play and coach at Carolina and I'm looking forward to being directly involved in the program again."
"I'm excited that Ken is coming to the network," said Durham, who is entering his 36th season as Carolina's play-by-play man. "Ken is a class act who brings to the broadcast booth a wealth of knowledge both as a player and coach."
