BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - No. 1-ranked North Carolina played to its second straight exhibition tie, a 1-1 draw with Gardner-Webb at Alumni Field Saturday. In their second of three exhibition matches, the Tar Heels played 18 men against the Bulldogs.
UNC, the preseason ACC favorites, struck early as Corey Ashe broke through the defense and scored the Tar Heels lone goal of the game at the 8:44 mark of the first period.
The rest of the first half proved to be a stalemate as both teams failed to capitalize on the offensive side of the ball, as UNC took a 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second period, the Bulldogs evened up the score in the 64th minute when senior Carlton Hughes placed a beautiful lob pass over the UNC defense, hitting a streaking Chris Salvaggione at the top of the box. Salvaggione then put the shot past the UNC keeper and just inside the front left post.
GWU's chance to take the lead came with only 4:50 remaining in the match as Hughes dribbled across the middle in took a shot from just outside the 18-yard box only to be denied by UNC's keeper Jacob Wescoe.
The Bulldogs were out shot by the Tar Heels 23-5 for the game, including a shot total of 13-1 in the first half.
The duo of Dane Geraci and Tyler Kettering had seven saves on the day for the Bulldogs, while the defense had three team saves of its own.
Carolina closes out its exhibition slate with a Blue-White Game at Fetzer Field Monday at 7 p.m.
