WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Seven different Tar Heels scored goals Sunday as the North Carolina field hockey team beat Villanova 7-1 in the Vonnie Gros Classic, played at West Chester University. No. 5 UNC improved to 6-0 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 4-3.
"It was a good weekend for us," said Carolina coach Karen Shelton, a West Chester alum who played for Gros at WCU and also on the U.S. National Team. "I think we got a strong performance from our team against a strong, aggressive and disciplined Villanova team. We had to earn this win."
In UNC's first game of the event, the Tar Heels beat the host Golden Rams 6-0 on Saturday. Villanova also won its first game, beating No. 14 Iowa 5-1 on Saturday.
For the second day in a row, senior co-captain Brooke Miller opened the scoring for UNC. After notching two goals Saturday against West Chester, she put Carolina on the board against Villanova with a penalty corner goal 6:16 into the match. Juniors Jesse Gey and Xan Funk assisted on the play.
Four minutes later, the Wildcats evened the score on a penalty-corner goal by Stephanie Campbell, assisted by Lauren Campanelli and Sam Coveleski.
But UNC pulled ahead for good just over a minute later on an unassisted goal by senior Karen Mann, then junior Alli Tanner scored on an assist by Miller to put the Tar Heels up 3-1 at halftime.
In the second half, sophomore Kate Scholl tallied her second goal of the weekend on a penalty stroke, UNC's first of the season, at the 33:02 mark. Junior Liz Morris had the next goal, assisted by Miller, at the 20:21 mark.
The Tar Heels added two more goals in the final 10 minutes of the match, with Gey scoring on an assist from freshman Illse Davids and redshirt freshman Stewi Downer scoring on an assist from Gey. Downer's goal was the first of her career, while Morris's and Gey's were their first of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell made five saves for UNC in playing all 70 minutes.
The Tar Heels return to action on Saturday when they host No. 3 Old Dominion at Francis E. Henry Stadium. No. 11 Virginia visits on Sunday for the start of Atlantic Coast Conference action. Both games are set for 1 p.m.
