Tar Heels Tied Atop Leaderboard After Two Rounds At Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. -- After finishing the first-round in first with a two-under-par 286, the University of North Carolina women's golf team finished with a 293 in the second-round of the Cougar Classic, but was able to maintain their overall lead with LSU.
The Tigers turned in the lowest team score of the day (284) in the second-round that enabled them to move into first place with the Tar Heels. Alabama followed suit with a 285 second-round score and now lie three shots off the lead pace set by Carolina and LSU. Tennessee is currently in fourth, while Florida State and host Furman are in fifth.
Like Carolina, Tar Heel Lauren Hunt was also in first after the first round of play on Monday. Also like Carolina, she ended the second-round in a tie where she started at. Hunt, a sophomore out of Little River, S.C., tallied a 69 in the first round and followed that off with a 71 in the afternoon round. Florida State's Whitney Brummett fired a 70 in both rounds of the day putting her at four-under and even with Hunt overall.
While Hunt had the lowest first-round score, Marci Turner of Tennessee turned in a 67 in the afternoon for the lowest round of the day that moved her into a five-way tie for third. Entering the final round of play on Tuesday, two shots separate the top seven golfers. Following Hunt's lead, Tar Heel Katie Miller had the next best day one performance for Carolina. Miller carded a 71 and a 74 in the two rounds and is currently in 11th. Sydney Crane and Ann Laney both sit at three-over for the tournament, two shots behind Miller. Freshman Kate Thomas rounds out the field for Carolina at nine-over.
The third and final round of play of the 2006 Cougar Classic will be played Tuesday at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan, S.C. The course features a par 72, 6,092-yard layout. Live scoring will be available online on Golfstat.com.
