CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore midfielder Michael Callahan came off the bench midway thought the second half to record his first career multi-goal game to lead No. 5 North Carolina to a 4-0 win over visiting Quinnipiac Tuesday at Fetzer Field. Seniors Michael Harrington and Ben Hunter also found the back of the net for the Tar Heels (6-1-0), who tallied more than one goal for the first time since the season-opening win over William & Mary.
In addition to Callahan's two-goal effort, Hunter added an assist to go with his second goal of the season. Scott Campbell and Brian Shriver each added two of the Tar Heels' season-best six assists in their largest offensive output since a 5-0 win over Boston College in the 2005 regular season finale. UNC dominated possession for much of the match and posted a season-high 24 shots against just seven for Quinnipiac.
Freshman goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty made a season-high four saves against the Bobcats (0-4-1) to record his second straight shutout and the sixth in seven games this season for Carolina.
Starting in the midfield for the first time this season, Harrington paid immediate dividends with his first goal of the year in the 13th minute. He buried a cross from Campbell from eight yards out to become the eighth different Tar Heel to score this season. Defender David Boole fed Shriver from the right to start the play. From the middle, Shriver then sent the ball to Campbell out on the left, who then crossed it to Harrington near the far post. Both Campbell and Shriver picked up assists on the score.
After neither team could scratch again in the second half, Callahan and Zach Loyd, who came off the bench for the first time in the 66th minute, hooked up for the Tar Heels' second goal in the 69th minute. Loyd played a through ball to Shriver, who crossed it from the right across an open net to Callahan, who tapped it in from six yards to become the ninth different goal scorer for UNC on the year.
A Cary product, Callahan followed six minutes later with a second tap-in for his first career multi-goal game and just the third goal of his career. Campbell picked up his second assist of the night with a feed to Hunter, who again crossed the ball from the right to Callahan, who finished from four yards in the 75th minute.
Hunter finished off the scoring with a 22-yard unassisted blast in the 86th minute for his second goal of the year. He now shares the team scoring lead of five points with Callahan, Campbell and Shriver.
The Tar Heels, who had scored just one goal in five straight matches, held possession for much of the first half and put a 10-3 advantage on shots. Senior Corey Ashe nearly netted a pair of goals but sent a strike off the post in the fifth minute and nailed one off the cross bar in the 16th.
Haggerty, who now has seven saves on the year and has not allowed a goal, thwarted the Bobcats' best chance in the 24th minute with a diving save of a Francis Mavula shot. Quinnipiac keeper Paul Fleck made five saves on the night.
The Tar Heels return to Atlantic Coast Conference action at No. 2 Clemson Friday at 8 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on the Fox Soccer Channel (Time Warner Digital Cable channel 144 in Chapel Hill).
