CLEMSON, S.C. - In a game that totaled just 15 total shots and four shots on goal, Clemson's Danny Poe scored the lone goal in the 54th minute to lead the No. 2 Tigers to a 1-0 win over fifth-ranked North Carolina Friday in front of a national television audience on the Fox Soccer Channel and 7,012 fans Riggs Field. The Tar Heels fall to 6-2-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the loss, while the Tigers improve to 7-0-0 and 2-0-0 in the ACC.
After neither team could manage much offensively in the first half, Poe found the back of the net from 10 yards out with the game-winner just over eight minutes into the second half. Mark Buchholz and Dane Richards picked up assists on Poe's third goal of the season.
Carolina outshot Clemson, 5-4, in the second half but could find the equalizer and was shutout for the first time this season and the first time since the 2005 ACC title game against Duke. The Tigers held a slight 8-7 edge on the shot chart on the night.
Carolina senior goalkeeper Justin Hughes was back in goal after missing the last two matches with a groin injury. He made two saves on the night and allowed the one goal. Phil Marfuggi (67 minutes) and Joseph Bendik (23 minutes) combined for the shutout for the Tigers. Marfuggi made Clemson's lone save on a shot by UNC's Bill Dworsky in the 82nd minute.
Carolina's final shot, a high Ted Odgers header off a Scott Campbell corner, came in the 87th minute.
The Tar Heels, who are 0-2 in the ACC for the first time since 1998, are back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday against VCU at Fetzer Field. Carolina returns to ACC action Friday, Sept. 22 against Virginia at home.
