LACKSBURG, Va. --- North Carolina suffered its first Atlantic Coast Conference loss of the season, falling to Virginia Tech, 30-24, 30-19, 30-19, Thursday night at Cassell Coliseum. Virginia Tech's Taylor Parrish led all players with 20 kills, while Michelle Lang had 36 assists, six digs and five blocks.
Carolina (3-8, 1-1 ACC) held the advantage in the early going, with a 5-1 run giving the Tar Heels a 15-12 lead midway through the frame. But the Virginia Tech block and the struggles of the UNC outside hitters led to the Hokies (8-3, 2-0 ACC) cruising to a 30-24 win. Virginia Tech's strong finish to game one carried over to game two, as the hosts got out to a quick 15-9 lead. Carolina responded with a 6-2 run that cut the deficit to two at 17-15, but the Tar Heels would get no closer. The Hokies scored 11 of the next 13 points to build an 11-point lead and eventually won, 30-19. Tech outhit Carolina .231 to .-.054 in the frame, with Jen Albrecht leading the way with six kills on ten swings.
The Hokies closed out the match with a 30-19 win in game three, as the hosts never trailed in the final frame. With the score still close at 10-8, Virginia Tech strung together three blocks and a kill in four points to make it 14-8. Carolina would not get closer than four the rest of the way, as the Hokies hit a match-high .417 for the game.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a Friday night tilt with Virginia. First serve at Memorial Gymnasium is set for 7.
