CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman forward Bill Dworsky scored on a rebound shot just over five minutes into overtime, and senior goalkeeper Justin Hughes made a season-high five saves to lift No. 5 North Carolina to a 1-0 victory over visiting Elon Tuesday at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (9-2-0) have now had a different player score the game-winning goal in each of their nine victories.
Dworksy's game-winner came on a follow from a saved shot by Tar Heel defender David Boole, who fired a strike from 25 yards that was saved by Elon keeper Taylor Saxe. Dworsky, a Huntsville, Ala., native, corralled the rebound and scored from five yards out into the lower left-hand corner of the net to give the Tar Heels their 10th win all-time over the Phoenix.
The goal was the first of Dworksy's collegiate career, and Boole's assist was his first on the season.
Hughes picked up his fifth shutout of the season and the 18th of his career with the five saves, including a pair towards the end of regulation to help send the match to overtime. The Tar Heels now have seven shutouts on the year and 22 in 35 games since the start of last season. Saxe made five saves for Elon.
Playing in overtime for the first time this season and the second straight year against the Phoenix (8-3-1), Carolina wrapped up its three-match home stand unbeaten. The Tar Heels also improved to 8-0-0 against non-conference opponents on the year.
After neither team managed much offensively in the first half, Carolina opened the second frame with back-to-back-to-back shot attempts but could not find the back of the net. The Tar Heels outshot the Phoenix, 10-4, in the second half, and nearly won the match in regulation with a flurry of three shots in the 80th minute. Scott Campbell sent the second of his two shots off the post, and an Elon defender made a back save on a Zach Loyd shot to keep UNC off the board.
The Phoenix, who had only four shots in the first 87 minutes, put two shots on goal in the 88th minute, but Hughes made two stops.
The Tar Heels outshot Elon on the night, 17-7, and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Carolina returns to Atlantic Coast Conference action at Virginia Tech Friday.
