North Carolina freshman Christine Nguyen received the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week honor. A native of Plano, Texas, Nguyen placed third in the all-around (38.725) at a quad meet in Lexington, Ky., on January 26th against Maryland, West Virginia and Kentucky. She notched a 9.850 on vault (tied for 2nd place) and a 9.825 on beam (tied for 1st place).
Although still getting adjusted to the college format, Nguyen has already made a huge impact on the young Tar Heel team. On Jan. 21 at the George Washington Invitational, Nguyen won first place on uneven bars (9.775) and beam (9.850). In Carolina's season opener against William & Mary, Nguyen achieved the highest score of the meet with a 9.825 to place first on balance beam.
Nguyen and the Tar Heels' next meet is on the campus of NC State for the 12th annual Governor's Cup on Feb. 2. The team goes into the meet having won the Governor's Cup five times in the past six years.
