Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- North Carolina head coach Butch Davis took time to meet with Dr. Stephen Andreaus, a Raleigh dentist, on Tuesday as Andreaus was bicycling across the state of North Carolina to promote cancer awareness. The 7-day, 750-mile solo cycling marathon called, "The Ride for Oral Cancer" began on Oct. 5 and ends Oct. 11. The initial stage of the ride followed the famous Cherokee "Trail of Tears" through the North Carolina mountains.
Davis, who is part Cherokee Indian, greeted Dr. Andreaus at the Kenan Football Center as he was making his way through Chapel Hill. Davis gave Andreaus a bottle of Gatorade and wished him well on his journey which will stretch from Murphy to Manteo.
"It's a great cause and I admire Dr. Andreaus for what he's doing to help raise awareness," said Davis. "If I had time, I might jump on a bike and join him."
A dedicated road cyclist who has ridden in major cycling events in Europe, Andreaus is covering approximately 140 miles a day. He says he was inspiried to undertake the trek by his friendship with Lance Armstrong, a seven-time winner of cycling's Tour de France and a cancer survivor.
"I was also motivated by UNC's head football coach Butch Davis' diagnosis earlier this year," says Andreaus. "It was great to meet him and say hello. He is a great example of why it's so important, especially for adults over 40, to have a cancer screening as part of an annual dental checkup."
