Ryan Adeleye Named Progress Energy Tar Heel Of The Week

Progress Energy's Tar Heel of Week Ryan Adeleye scored the only goal of the game in overtime and anchored a defense that allowed just five shots and five corners as the Carolina men's soccer team beat Duke, 1-0, last Thursday. Adeleye, a junior defender from Maplewood, N.J., led the Tar Heels to their first win over No. 8 Duke since 2003, as he scored a rebound goal in the 103rd minute to even Carolina's ACC record at 2-2-0. The Tar Heels posted their fifth shutout in 11 games in the victory.

Beans led UNC to two wins last week as the Tar Heels improved to 16-0 on the season. On Friday at William & Mary, Carolina played without its top three scorers, all of whom were competing as part of the U.S. National Team. eans, a co-captain, provided crucial leadership as the Tar Heels won 4-2. She did the same on Sunday at Virginia as UNC, with the National Team trio back in the lineup, stayed undefeated in ACC play with a 3-0 win. "Laree is a leader by example," coach Karen Shelton says. "She gives great effort and elevates the play of others because she's playing so hard."
Ariel Harris
Women's Soccer, Defender

Senior defender Ariel Harris was rock solid in both games the past week as the Tar Heels defeated a pair of nationally-ranked opponents, both local rivals. Harris led a Carolina defensive effort which held Duke and Wake Forest to a combined 11 shots and four corner kicks in the two games as the Tar Heels beat the Blue Devils 2-1 and the Demon Deacons 1-0. Harris is a senior leader on a UNC defense which has allowed only 0.5 goals, 5.1 shots and 2.0 corner kicks per game this season.

Men's Swimming

Freshman Tyler Harris had an outstanding first meet as a Tar Heel as Carolina fell at nationally-ranked Georgia. Harris sprinted away with a first place in the 400-yard IM at 3:55.57 and a second place in the 200-yard fly at 1:51.16. His times were less than four seconds off his previous best shaved and tapered times in the 400 IM and the 1000 free and both rank in UNC's Top 15 career times in those events. Harris' times rank No. 1 in the ACC in the 400 IM and 200 fly and second in the 1000 free..
ALISON CLEMENS
Women's Swimming
Sophomore, Staten Island, N.Y.
Sophomore Alison Clemens had three outstanding times in Carolina's loss at nationally-ranked Georgia. She won the 400 IM in 4:23.71, the best time in the ACC this year while swimming an NCAA B qualifying standard in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:16.93. Clemens also swam at 1:03.93 in the 100 breaststroke. Clemens' 200 breast time ranks 2nd in the ACC this year and her 100 breast time ranks No. 3.
BRIE FELNAGLE
Cross Country

Junior Brie Felnagle finished second at one of the premier events of the cross country season. Felnagle was one of two runners to break the course record at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terra Haute, Ind. on Saturday as she finished in a time of 19:57 for the 6K event. Felnagle's second place finish fueled the Tar Heels to a 12th place finish at the site of the 2007 NCAA National Championships. Felnagle is a returning All-America who has competed in just two races this season taking fourth at the Notre Dame Invitational two weeks ago. Felnagle will look to repeat as an all-ACC selection in two weeks when the Tar Heels head to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the ACC Championships.

Men's Golf
Junior, Pinehurst, N.C.
Robert Riesen fired an even par 72 in the final round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges to finish with a seven-under 209 total and a tie for fourth place. Riesen fired a one-under 71 in the first round followed by a six-under 66 in the second round.
The Tar Heels and Virginia Tech tied for the team championship at the end of 54 holes; however, the Hokies were awarded the team title based on the fifth player's score. Virginia Tech's fifth player carded a 73 while Carolina posted a 74.
The Tar Heels conclude their fall season Oct. 29-30 at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
UNC VARSITY EIGHT
Rowing
The UNC varsity eight took first place in its race on Sunday at the Occoquan Chase, besting a 20-boat field with a time of 16:15.6. The lineup was Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Lisy McIntee, Megan McMullin, Katie Wood, Ruby Woodside, Whitney Hileman, Kelsey Grich, Cara Van Dorn, and Audrey Mosley. Sunday's competition was the first racing of the fall for the Tar Heels, who won three of the six events they entered.
