ELON, N.C. - North Carolina needed a late goal from junior midfielder Garry Lewis to register a 1-1 tie with Elon Tuesday at Rhodes Stadium. With the draw, the Tar Heels (4-3-5) matched their school record of five ties set in 1979 in just 12 games.
The Phoenix (6-3-4) has recorded ties against all three Atlantic Coast Conference opponents it has faced - Carolina, No. 1 Wake Forest and Clemson.
With Carolina trailing 1-0 in front of an Elon-record 1,773 fans, Lewis found the back of the net on a header off of a Michael Callahan corner kick to knot the score at one in the 79th minute. The goal was Lewis' second of the season and third as a Tar Heel. Callahan's assist was his third of the season, which matches the team lead.
After the Tar Heels got on the board at 78:15, neither team had many scoring chances for the remainder of regulation. Elon posted a 5-4 edge in shots in overtime, but the Tar Heels finished with a 20-11 lead in shots for the night. UNC posted a 9-3 edge in corners.
The Phoenix got on the board in the 38th minute on Daniel Street's second goal of the season off an assist from Brett Paschall.
Carolina rookie goalkeeper Tyler Deric made four saves and allowed just the one goal, while Elon's Kyle Boerner stop nine Tar Heel shots on goal.
In addition to equaling the school record for ties in a season, the Tar Heels have now played seven overtime matches this year to equal the most since playing 10 OT games in 1979. Carolina also went to extra time on seven occasions in 2005 and 1992.
Carolina returns to the road Friday at Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. A webcast of the game will be available live and on-demand at ACCSelect.com.
