Tar Heels Fall At Virginia Tech, 2-1

Blacksburg, Va. - The University of North Carolina men's soccer team scored first on Friday night but could not hold the lead, dropping a 2-1 decision at No. 5-ranked Virginia Tech at Tech Soccer Stadium in Blacksburg, Va. Scott Campbell scored Carolina's goal at the 13:55 mark in the first half, taking a crossing pass from Zach Loyd and flicking it into the net.
With the loss, Carolina falls to 4-4-5 this season, 2-3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokies improve to 8-1-4, 2-0-3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels were facing their third top-10 opponent in the last four games on Friday night.
Scott Spangler scored the game-winner for Virginia Tech in the 60th minute off a Stefan Hock assist. Hock fired a cross that deflected off a crowd in front of the net before Spangler finished with the goal at the 59:39 mark.
Robert Edmans scored the Hokies' first goal at the 28:54 mark. Charlie Campbell stole a UNC pass and passed to Edmans on a breakaway for to tie the score at 1-1 after Carolina had taken the early lead.
Tyler Deric played well in the goal for the Tar Heels, recording seven saves in a full 90 minutes of action. Markus Aigner tallied two saves in 90 minutes for Virginia Tech. The Hokies out-shot Carolina by a 14-8 margin, including a 6-3 edge in the decisive second half. UNC committed 18 fouls to Tech's 10, and both teams had three corner kicks apiece.
The Tar Heels will return to action next week with three consecutive home games in a week's span, beginning next Tuesday Oct. 23 with a match against High Point at 7:30 at Fetzer Field. Carolina will play Clemson next Friday night and Campbell on Tuesday Oct. 30. Both of those matches also will begin at 7:30 at Fetzer Field.
