CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Seven different Tar Heels found the back of the net to lead North Carolina to its best offensive showing since 2002 Tuesday in a 7-1 victory over Liberty at Fetzer Field. Junior forward Brian Shriver scored the first goal and added a pair of assists to lead Carolina (3-2-4) to its first home win of the season.
In addition to Shriver's efforts, juniors Scott Campbell and Ryan Adeleye and sophomore Zach Loyd each added a goal and an assist. David Rodriguez, Bill Dworsky and Cameron Brown also scored for the Tar Heels, who last tallied seven goals in a 7-1 win at Campbell in 2002. Carolina also scored four goals in a half for the first time since a 5-0 win over Mercer in 2003.
The seven goals matched the Tar Heels' season output entering Tuesday's match and also marked the second most goals scored by an ACC team this season. UNC has now outscored its opponents 14-6 on the year.
Adrian Bumbut scored the lone goal in the 65th minute for the Flames (6-2-1), who had outscored their opponents 12-4 on the season entering the match.
In goal, Carolina started sophomore Brooks Haggerty for the first time since this year after preseason knee surgery. He went 57 minutes and made one save before senior Chris Litchford came on to close out the victory.
The Tar Heels, who outshot the Flames by an 18-7 margin, grabbed an early lead on Shriver's first goal of the season in the 11th minute of action. He took a feed from Campbell, and found himself one-on-one with a Liberty defender in the box. Shriver dribbled around the defender at about the 10-yard mark and deposited the shot into the lower right-hander corner of the net for the seventh goal of his career.
Carolina added to its advantage in the 20th minute on the first career strike by Rodriguez, who scored on the rebound of a shot by Loyd. Junior Joan Carvajal sent a corner kick into the box that Loyd headed on goal. Liberty keeper Paul Gilbert saved the shot, but Rodriguez was there to guide the rebound into the left side of the net and give the Tar Heels a two-goal advantage.
Dworsky and Loyd then added goals just over a minute a part to cap the Tar Heels' four-goal outburst in the first half. Dworsky flicked a header into the net off a corner kick from Michael Callahan in the 33rd minute, and Loyd followed in the 35th minute with a seven-yard strike off a feed from Shriver, who dribbled into the box and set up the trailing Loyd for his second goal of the year. Dworsky's goal was his team-best fourth of the season.
Adeleye picked up where the Tar Heels left off in the first half with his first goal in Carolina Blue on the rebound of a Shriver shot in the 52nd minute. Callahan sent a corner kick into the box that Shriver headed on goal and Gilbert saved, but Adeleye was there to put away UNC's fifth goal of the night.
After Campbell added a strike in the 57th minute on a through ball from Adeleye for his first goal of the season and the 14th of his career, Brown closed out the scoring with his second goal on the year with just eight seconds left on the clock. He collected a loose ball punched out by Gilbert and beat the keeper to close the scoring for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels return to Atlantic Coast Conference action Saturday at No. 4 Virginia at 7 p.m. A webcast of the match will be available live and on-demand through ACCSelect.com.
