CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Despite a late rally that included a 75th minute goal from freshman midfielder Cameron Brown, North Carolina fell to No. 4 Virginia, 2-1, Saturday at Klöckner Stadium. The Tar Heels (3-3-4, 1-2-0 ACC) have how lost 15 straight games in Charlottesville since 1977.
Atlantic Coast Conference leading scorer Yannick Reyering and Chris Tierney each scored for the Cavaliers (7-1-2, 1-0-2 ACC), who took a two-goal lead in the 54th minute. Virginia held a slight 15-14 edge on the shot chart and held off late pressure from the Tar Heels to claim their first conference win of the season.
Carolina put eight shots on goal but was held scoreless until Brown netted his third goal of the season and second this week to trim the lead to 2-1 at the 74:43 mark. The Garland, Texas, native volleyed a cross from Michael Callahan into the net from six yards out to get UNC back in the match late in the second half. Brown is now second on the team with six points on the season, while Callahan recorded his second assist.
UNC picked up the intensity over the final 15 minutes, and had one last shot in the final minute of action on a 25-yard free kick from Zach Loyd that did not clear the Cavzaliers' defensive wall.
Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Deric matched a season-high with six saves in his ninth start of the year, while Virginia keeper Michael Giallombardo made seven stops.
Reyering, who now has eight goals on the season, gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute on a 10-yard blast to the near post off an assist from Colin Givens. Virginia extended that advantage to 2-0 in the 54th minute on a Tierney header off a rebound. That score was Tierney's fourth of the season and proved to be the game winner.
Carolina back in action Thursday against Duke at 8:30 p.m. at Fetzer Field in the second half of a doubleheader. The Tar Heel and Blue Devil women will kick off the action at 6 p.m. Both matches are worth one point towards the Carlyle Cup, the all-sports competition between Carolina and Duke.
