CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept all five events at the 2007 Tar Heel Invitational Friday evening at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heel effort was led by freshman Tyler Harris of Richmond, Va., who captured both the 400-yard individual medley and the 1650-yard freestyle.
UNC finished on top in all four relay events as the men won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:26.90 and the 200-yard medley relay in 1:34.86. The women won those two events in times of 1:34.57 and 1:47.07, respectively.
In the 400-yard individual medley, Carolina sophomore Alison Clemens won the women's race in a career best time of 4:19.02. That was also an NCAA "B" qualifying standard. Meanwhile, freshman Tyler Harris copped the men's event in an NCAA "B" standard time of 3:53.36.
Seniors Kelsey Morrissy and Zach Swartz were the winners of the 50-yard freestyles. Morrissy took the women's race in 23.46 seconds and Swartz was the men's winner in 21.04 seconds.
Carolina took the top two places in the women's 1650-yard freestyle, both in NCAA "B" standard times. Junior Whitney Sprague was first in 16:30.98 and freshman Katura Harvey was second in 16:45.52.
On the men's side, Harris nipped fellow Tar Heel freshman Joe Kinderwater in a close race in the 1650. Harris touched first in 15:41.25 with Kinderwater less than a second behind in 15:42.28.
