NORFOLK, Va. - Behind goals from a pair of seniors, the top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat No. 10 Old Dominion 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field to finish the regular season undefeated at 18-0.
It's the second time in school history that UNC has finished the regular season without a loss. The first was in 1995, when Carolina went on to claim the ACC and NCAA titles and wrap up the year at 24-0.
On a rainy afternoon in Norfolk, Alli Tanner scored the gamewinner for the second outing in a row. A forward from New Providence, Pa., Tanner got UNC on the board in the 14th minute of play on a shot from in front of the cage, assisted by another senior, Jesse Gey. The goal was Tanner's seventh of the season.
The second and third goals came from senior Rachel Dawson. At the 22:48 mark, she nailed a penalty stroke, her second of the season. Six minutes into the second half, Dawson converted one of UNC's 11 penalty corners, assisted by Gey and freshman Katelyn Falgowski. A midfielder/back from Berlin, N.J., Dawson leads the Tar Heels with 16 goals this season.
In the Tar Heels' first victory at Old Dominion since 2004, they finished with 24 shots to ODU's three. Lady Monarch goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll tied her career high with 13 saves, the same number she had in the season's first UNC-ODU matchup, a 3-0 Carolina win in Chapel Hill on Sept. 14.
The shutout was UNC's 12th of the year. The Tar Heels have allowed just nine goals in the season's 18 games.
"We played well and it was nice to get another shutout," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It was an emotional day for ODU, their senior day and also the last game at Foreman Field. There's a lot of history between our two programs on that field." The Lady Monarchs will move into a new facility next season.
Next up for UNC is the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Nov. 1, 2 and 4 at Boston College. As the No. 1 seed, the Tar Heels receive a bye into the semifinals and will open play Friday at 4 p.m. The tournament bracket will be announced by the ACC following this weekend's games.
