CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The second round of the Tar Heel Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course, which features nine of the top 20 teams in the country, was marked with low scores Saturday. Tennessee, which was in a tie for third to begin the day, shot one-over 289 and has a three-stroke lead over the 18-team field at 10-over 586. Tennessee's coach, Judi Pavon, cites the collective effort of the entire Volunteer squad as to why they currently have the lead. Duke was the low team on the day at one-under par 287, placing them in second. The Georgia Bulldogs moved up two spots to third place after firing a five-over 293. Rounding out the top five is first-roud leader Wake Forest and another ACC team, NC State at 17-over par. Eight teems are within 10 strokes of the lead going into Sunday's final round.
For the second straight day, The Tar Heels struggled on their home course. The Tar Heels fell to 14th place overall despite shooting three strokes better than yesterday. Coach Sally Austin believes the Tar Heels should be performing better, but they are struggling to put the ball in the hole. The top finisher for the Tar Heels was Kate Thomas who shot 69 and tied for the third best round on Saturday. Thomas, a sophomore from Murwillumbah, Australia, was pleased with her performance, however thought that she had an opportunity to play even better. She claims her iron play was the reason she scored so low, and had full confidence that if she aimed at the pin, she would be within fifteen feet. She is tied for 13th at three-over par 147.
Amanda Blumenherst, a junior from Duke, fired a 68 in the second round and is currently atop the leaderboard. Blumenherst birdied her final three holes, which gives her a three-stroke lead going into Sunday at five-under-par 139 for the tournament. Behind her is Alina Lee from Georgia, who also shot 68 in the second round, and Natalie Sheary of Wake Forest. Lee and Sheary trail Blumenherst by three strokes at two-under 142. Four players are tied for fourth at one-under par 143 while 10 players are within six strokes of the lead.
For the Tar Heels, junior Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., shook off a triple bogey on 17 (her 8th hole) to shoot 76 and is tied for 49th. After having a strong day yesterday, senior Ann Laney, from Charlotte, N.C., struggled shooting 83 and is tied for 69th. Senior Laura Caniff, from Russell, Ky., fired an 80 and is tied for 73rd place while senior Colette Lowe, from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., is tied for 80th after posting an 78. Three Tar Heels are playing as individuals, junior Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., suffering from a wrist injury, and freshmen Jordan Allyne, from Bellevue, Wash., as well as Margaret Pentrack, from Pittsburgh, Pa. Crane played well shooting 73 and is tied for 32nd. Pentrack carded a second straight 78 while Allyne posted an 82.
The Tar Heel Invitational is being played at UNC Finley Golf Course located in Chapel Hill. The course features a par-72, 6,285-yard course. The final round is being played Sunday with a 9:15 a.m. shotgun start. There is no admission and the public is invited to attend.
