GREENSBORO, N.C. - Casey Nogueira of North Carolina and Brooke Knowlton of Boston College have been tabbed Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Co-Players of the Week for their performances ending the week of October 7. The league honor is a first for the underclassmen, and it also marks the second time this season that two players have shared the league's weekly award.
A native from Rexford, N.Y., Knowlton played a key role in helping ninth-ranked Boston College remain unbeaten in conference action. Against Duke last Friday, the rookie forward scored the game-tying goal that denied the Blue Devils a victory as the two teams finished in a 1-1 tie. Knowlton then wrapped up the week with a game-winning goal at the 80:03 mark, giving the Eagles a 2-1 win over No. 18 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon.
Nogueira tallied four points on one goal and two assists as No. 12 North Carolina went 2-0 on the week. In Friday's 3-0 shutout victory over 14th-ranked Clemson, the sophomore forward picked up an assist on the insurance goal at the 78:41 mark to boost the Tar Heels to a 2-0 advantage. The Raleigh, N.C., native turned in an impressive performance at Maryland on Sunday, as she assisted on the second half goal by teammate Nikki Washington and then scored the game-winning goal just under three minutes in overtime to clinch the 2-1 victory for UNC.
Boston College and ACC leader North Carolina will be back in action this week. The Eagles (8-0-3, 1-0-2 ACC) travel to the Sunshine State to face Miami on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then head to Florida State for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
The Tar Heels (9-3-0, 3-1-0 ACC) remain at home, playing host to Duke at 6 p.m. on Thursday before entertaining Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both UNC matches will also be webcast on ACCSelect.com.
