Tate Named Progress Energy Tar Heel Of The Week

Brandon Tate had 223 all-purpose yards, including a 54-yrd touchdown run in Carolina's 33-27 win over Miami, and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week. The junior from Burlington, N.C., had two carries for 64 yards rushing and caught three passes for 54 yards, including a long of 49. His 54-yard reverse in the second quarter gave Carolina a 27-0 lead. In the third quarter with Carolina holding on to a 27-20 lead, he broke a tackle after a short pass and ran 49 yards to the Miami 34, setting up a field goal.

Beans provided the gamewinners in both of UNC's shutout victories over the weekend. Against No. 10 Boston College on Saturday, she scored in the 20th minute of play to put Carolina up for good en route to a 2-0 win. Against Radford on Sunday, when the program celebrated Senior Day, she scored UNC's first two goals on the way to a 6-0 victory. She now has nine goals this season, tied for second on the team.
CASEY NOGUEIRA
Women's Soccer, Forward

Nogeuira had a goal and two assists on the weekend to power UNC to a 2-0 weekend with wins over No. 14 Clemson 3-0 and Maryland 2-1 in overtime. Nogueira had the assist on the insurance goal in the 79th minute against Clemson, boosting UNC to a 2-0 lead. She came up big twice in the win at Maryland. Nogueira assisted on Nikki Washington's second half goal that put Carolina up 1-0 and after the game went to overtime Nogueira found the back of the net in the 93rd minute to clinch the win for the Tar Heels.

All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Carlotti advanced through
the 192-man singles bracket to the fourth round of the championships,
winning its first three matches in straight sets.

Brown scored in each of the Tar Heels' outings last week - a 7-1 win over Liberty and a 2-1 loss at Virginia. He capped the win over the Flames with a score in the final minute of play and then added UNC's lone goal against the Cavaliers in the 75th minute. Brown is second on the team with three goals and six points.

Kate Thomas fired a three-over-par 219 total to lead the Tar Heels this past weekend at the Tar Heel Invitational. Carolina played host to 18 teams, nine in the top 20, at UNC Finley Golf Course, a par 72, 6,285-yard layout. After carding a 78 in the first round, Thomas responded with a three-under 69 in the second round and an even-par 72 in the final round to finish in a tie for 10th place.
The Tar Heels finished in 11th place. The Tar Heels fired a three-over 291 in the final round after carding 306-303 in the first two rounds to finish with a 900 total. The Tar Heels return to action Oct. 12-14 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.
