WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 2 Wake Forest took an early lead in the fifth minute and put the game away with a second goal in the 87th to claim a 2-0 win over North Carolina in men's soccer action Saturday at Spry Stadium. The Tar Heels (6-6-5, 3-4-0 ACC) could muster only a season-low two shots in their second loss of the week.
The Demon Deacons (13-1-2, 5-1-1) wasted little time getting on the board at the 4:45 mark on Lyle Adams' third goal of the season. He scored on a crossing free kick from Patrick Phelan to give Wake an early 1-0 lead.
There was little action over the rest of the first period, as the teams combined for just four more shots before the break. Junior midfielder Michael Callahan took the Tar Heels' first shot of the match in the 41st minute.
The second half was much of the same, as Carolina and Wake took only five combined shots before Sam Cronin found the back of the net at 86:23 to push the lead to 2-0. Austin da Luz picked up an assist on Cronin's third goal of the year.
Sophomore Brooks Haggerty started in goal for Carolina and allowed the first goals of his collegiate career in his sixth game played. He made three saves. The Deacs' Brian Edwards picked up the shutout but did not have to make any saves.
Wake Forest outshot the Tar Heels, 9-2, and posted a 6-5 edge on corner kicks.
Carolina returns to action Friday, Nov. 9 for their regular season finale against Maryland at Fetzer Field at 7:30 p.m. A webcast of the match will be available live and on-demand at ACCSelect.com.
