ATLANTA, GA. - University of North Carolina freshman Tyler Harris of Richmond, Va., swam his way to a University record in the 400-yard individual medley Friday afternoon at the 2007 United States Swimming Short Course National Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Harris' performance broke the existing Tar Heel record which was set by Daniel Summerlin in 1994.
Harris was clocked in 3:50.58 Friday morning, qualifying fourth in the event. He finished eighth in the event in the evening final with a time a second slower at 3:51.68. Harris' 3:50.58 is not only the school record but also the fastest time in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season by 2.73 seconds.
On Thursday, Harris finished 30th in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:30.10, his best time of the 2007-08 season.
Carolina sophomore Ashley Howard was 58th in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:57.64, 72nd in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:51.62 and 90th in the 100-yard backstroke at 57.91.
On Saturday, four Tar Heels will be in action. Harris will swim in the 200-yard butterfly and Howard will swim her best event, the 200-yard backstroke. Senior Kelsey Morrissy and freshman Rebecca Kane will swim Saturday in the 100-yard freestyle. Kane and Morrissy will also swim Sunday in the timed finals of the U.S. Swimming Long Course National Invitational.
