Most eyes in the NFL today will be on the Indianapolis-New England showdown. But Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean tells a different story, and it's one every Carolina fan should know. It's the story of David Thornton, who has turned into one of the NFL's best linebackers while also being one of its best people.

Thornton is a diehard Tar Heel who is as likely to pop up at a women's basketball game (he made it a point to see the Tar Heels in person when they played an NCAA contest in Nashville two years ago) as he is at a football game. He was also the first-ever Tar Heel Monthly Tar Heel of the Year, which might have been the first introduction for many Carolina fans to his incredible background.
