Chapel Hill - The Tar Heels J.V. team proved they had the ability to put points on the board as they scored 100 points in their first game defeating a noticeably weaker opponent, Mt. Olive College (Mt. Olive, N.C.) in the Smith Center Saturday night.
The Heels had a balanced attack with seven of their ten players scoring double figures. Two first-year players, senior Marcus Wilson and freshman Ford Tanner, led the team with 17 each.
Both teams showed some rust in the first half of their first game of the year. The Heels committed 20 turnovers, while Mt. Olive turned the ball over 25 times.
Coaches and players after the game chalked up the sloppiness to the fact that the team had only been practicing for 2 weeks before their first game.
"Effort wise we played hard," Coach Jerod Haase said. "The execution just wasn't there."
The Heels played two consistent halves as they led 48-26 at halftime and outscored Mt. Olive 52-27 in the second half.
"Look for us to get a lot better as the season goes on," said Tanner, starting center and co-leading scorer.
James Gallagher, Nick Thomas, Terrence Petree, Brad Jones and Robert Johnson also scored in double figures showing this year's team has plenty of guys that can score.
"We could have done better offensively," said co-leading scorer Wilson. "There were things we could have improved on, but overall we had a good performance."
Daniel Bolick, Brit Milner, Frank Milner and Claude Shields didn't suit up Saturday because they haven't been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
The team looks to stay undefeated as they take on Pfeiffer this Friday, Nov. 9th at 4:30 p.m. in the Smith Center.
