CHAPEL HILL—On February 12, the UNC JV basketball team took on the Holy Rams of Word of God Christian Academy in what proved to be the closest game of the season thus far.
Word of God held the lead through much of the first half, demanding a tighter defense from the Heels and motivating a fast-paced game. This was the first game all season in which the Heels trailed for more than five minutes of play. Freshman Pearce Landry served as the spark for Carolina's breakaway, scoring back-to-back three's that put the Heels up 26-24 in the first half. By halftime, the Tar Heels had extended their lead to 40-33.
The Heels kept on pace and finished the game with a 90-73 victory. Leading scorer, Andy Gillespie, had 18 points, nine of which came from three-pointers. Four other players had major contributions, scoring in double-digit: Will Breck (15), Brooks Palmer (15), Caleb Ellis (12), and Robbie O'Han (11).
The win over Word of God made the Heels 11-0 for the season. They will face Fork Union Military Academy on Thursday, February 15th, for the 2nd Annual Dean E. Smith Tribute Game, held in Carmichael Arena.
