Four Tar Heels Go Unbeaten On Day One Of UNCG Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Day one of the UNCG Southern Scuffle saw four Tar Heels go unbeaten, leading the team to its 16th place standing with 24.5 points, which is tied with Appalachian State. Drew Forshey, Ben Fiacco, Dennis Drury and Justin Dobies advanced through to the round of eight. Three Tar Heels were eliminated after dropping two bouts.
Forshey, a 125-pounder, began his run by pinning Vitaly Radsky of Davidson in 2:36 and followed with a win via major decision over Duke's Kellan McKeon 16-3. He then set a date with David Tomasette of Hofstra with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line, after defeating Maryland's Pat Strizki 6-3.
At 157, Fiacco defeated Clint Stout of Maryland and Drake Hovis of Cornell 10-4, 12-3 respectively. Drury, sitting at 197 pounds, began Saturday with a huge victory of Matt Panasevich of Cornell. After winning via decision 7-0, Drury then solidified his spot in the final eight after defeating UNCG grappler Kane Smith 3-0.
Continuing his sterling start to the season, Dobies posted a major decision victory over VMI's Josh Wine 11-2 in his first bout of the day and then breezed by Minnesota's Joe Nord 7-2. Dobies now holds an 11-3 record on the season. Forshey, Fiacco, Drury and Dobies will look to remain unbeaten Sunday as they continue on in their respective weight class brackets.
Danny Lopes (133), Vincent Ramirez (149) , Thomas Ferguson (157), Thomas Scotton (157), Kyle Kiss (174), Kevin Owen (174), Nick Tenpenny (184) and George Kocher (197) are also still alive in competition in consolation brackets.
The Minnesota Gophers have claimed the top spot at the UNCG Southern Scuffle after day one with 53.5 points. The final day of the Southern Scuffle is Sunday.
