CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Thanks to back-to-back College World Series Championship Series appearances and 111 wins over the last two seasons, North Carolina has established itself as one of the top programs in all of college baseball. Rivals.com college baseball editor Kendall Rogers has taken notice, ranking the Tar Heels as the No. 5 overall program in the nation and No. 1 in the Southeast.
With its success over the last couple of seasons and a new ballpark on the horizon, Carolina ranked fifth behind two-time defending national champion Oregon State and perennial powers Cal State Fullerton, Texas and Rice. Additionally, the Tar Heels were ranked as the top program in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast and Southeastern conferences.
Rogers had the following to say about the Tar Heels in his rankings: "What a difference a few years make. North Carolina was once a program with a name and nothing to show for it. However, the tide has turned in impressive fashion during the past few seasons. Not only have the Tar Heels become one of the nation's elite, they've also made their mark in Omaha. The Tar Heels made waves by reaching the CWS Finals two seasons ago. They made an even bigger statement by attaining the same goal last season. In addition to competing at a high level, UNC has established consistency - something they used to lack. With Mike Fox and his coaching staff continuing to recruit at a high level, the program's future remains bright."
The Tar Heels open the 2008 campaign at Florida Atlantic Feb. 22.
