Opening Comments:
"Well, it was definitely a better day for us than it was for Skip's team. I think that we were pretty attentive. A lot of people wondered if we would have a let down after the Duke game and I challenged the kids a little bit and talked about that before the game. The fact that we have the '57 and '82 team back here I think that also made our guys a little more attentive to what we wanted to do and had the intensity right from the start. We had one stretch for about three and a half minutes in the first half that we didn't score, we didn't guard, we didn't rebound, we didn't do much of anything but other than that the other sixteen and a half minutes of the first half we were really good. It's 19 at half and then we started making more shots. For us, it was just a much better day than it was for Skip and I think it was like that snowball effect - started rolling and it got bigger and bigger for us."
On how Reyshawn Terry was feeling today compared to the NC State game:
"Well, he is feeling a lot better right now. It always looks good and feels good when the shot goes in. There is no question about that. He really looked bad the last two days. Thursday he didn't practice hard at all. I nicknamed him Fred cause he moved around like Fred Sanford out there."
On how well the team played offensively in the last seven minutes of the first half:
"Who knows? I think that I was mad every time we missed a shot, but that's me. I thought that we were pretty dog gone good during that time period. Again, I think it was about three and a half minutes where we didn't score and they came and took the lead. After that we were really good. We were really good on both ends of the court. I think that, at that point, holding them to thirty-two percent and shooting sixty-one percent, that means a big-time margin. The only thing we didn't do was keep them off the offensive boards. They had seven rebounds at the half to our two."
On the meaning of having the 1957 and 1982 Championship teams in the stands:
"It means a great deal to me - can't be a bigger North Carolina basketball fan than Roy Williams. It's just the bottom line. To have those guys back, I was very fortunate to be involved with the '82 team. I was here 10 years as an assistant - got to know the guys on the '57 team quite well. Coached Joe Quigg's son. So I have great feelings about those guys. When I came back here I knew my first job was I had to win. That is the bottom line. I really wanted to do a lot of things to get the old-timers, and everybody that has ever played here, feel like this was their program."
Wake Forest Head Coach Skip Prosser
Opening Statement:
" As you can imagine, there's not a lot to say. They're very, very good. You have to score to beat them because they have so many offensive weapons. One of the telling stats of the first half is that they were 12 for 16 inside the paint and we were 6 for 16 inside the paint, hence our misses became outlet passes, fueled their break, gave us such a large deficit, and in the second half we did not have the wherewithal to make stops. The resulting carnage is something you all witnessed. There's really not a lot to say from my standpoint."
On what turned the game after jumping out to a 23-22 lead:
"I think it's a reflection of our defense, but also I thought we had so many empty trips where we got the ball relatively close to the basket and gave them opportunities in transition. When they get going like that it's like they're running downhill. You have to be able to be somewhat efficient offensively and I think we were a little bit for the first twelve or thirteen minutes of the half, and then that last seven minutes, I'll have to see the tape, but we got the ball close to the basket a few times and missed some open shots and those became outlet passes for them."
On Winston-Salem native Reyshawn Terry's play:
"I think that his maturation is a real credit, not just to Reyshawn, but to the staff here. I've just watched him on tape, and I know every game hasn't been a great game for him, but he's played pretty well. He's a senior, and it's often talked about how seniors have the advantage of no choice and want to make it special, but he had a good year last year as a junior too. I think he played well."
On his team and breaking down the tape of this game:
"Every time you do something, it's a teachable moment. There's still a lot of basketball to be played. We've got five ACC games left to be played, so without a doubt we'll look at the tape. I've never been one that believes in throwing it in the trashcan and moving on to the next one. I think you can learn something from what happened. It's disconcerting, we've had good success against Carolina in the past, certainly not this year, but give them credit, they have quite a team."
UNC Player Quotes
Tyler Hansbrough
On playing in front of the past National Championship teams:
It's special. A lot of them did a lot, accomplished a lot in college. That is something that we look up to and we kind of want to do something like they did.
On playing after the Duke game, trying to get the energy up:
We tried to put that game behind us and look forward to this game. Our energy, we have to have it every game, especially in the ACC or you are going to take a loss.
On the pressure of winning 25 years after the 1982 team, as they did after the 1957 team:
There's a little pressure. Anytime you play for North Carolina you expect to do big things. But we're taking it one game at a time and we'll see where we end.
Reyshawn Terry
On his overall performance today:
I just try, for the most part be consistent, and just do whatever it takes for my team to win.
On the Duke game and his defensive and rebounding performance in the second half:
Coach was getting on us pretty hard after the N.C. State game about rebounding and a lack of effort. Me, Danny, and all the perimeter guys just took it upon ourselves, whatever it takes just to get on the offensive and defensive boards. Once we started doing that I was able to push the ball down the court and make some plays
On the defensive aspect of his game:
I feel like it starts for me on the defensive end. Being a senior leader, just knowing what it takes to win ball games and it starts on the defensive end. If I can get the defensive part of that going, everything else seems to fall in place.
Ty Lawson
On pushing the ball during the game (when the other team is tired):
That's a main focus on our team. When they get tired, we just have to push it even more. Make a couple stops and just push it. They won't be able to run with us if they're tired. They had like no timeouts and the big TV timeout was already called, so just pushing it puts a lot of pressure on the other team.
On what the previous National Champions mean to the University:
They mean a lot to everybody around here. I hear people talking about them all the time:, like Michael Jordan, James Worthy, all them. So it's great motivation, great experience.
On the play of teammate Marcus Ginyard:
Marcus means a lot. He does all the dirty plays. Every team needs a dirty player to get in there and get rough. He gets in there and gets offensive rebounds, rebounds, plays defense, guards their best player. He's our energy guy.
