RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina posted wins in three of the first four bouts of the night, but NC State took five of the last six to claim a 25-12 win over the Tar Heels Wednesday at Reynolds Coliseum. The Tar Heels (7-7, 4-2 ACC) saw a four-match ACC winning streak snapped, while the Wolfpack improved to 9-7 and 2-2 in league action.
The Tar Heels' early wins helped them jump out to a 9-4 advantage after four bouts. Drew Forshey opened the match with a 9-3 decision over Taylor Cummings at 125 before All-America Evan Sola followed with a 6-0 shutout of Garrett Cummings at 133. Forshey is now 17-7 on the season, while the 11th-ranked Sola is 11-3.
After NC State's Darrion Caldwell picked up a major decision of Mike Rappo at 141, Vincent Ramirez, now 13-8 on the year, got the Tar Heels back on track with a 4-2 decision over Joe Caramanica to give UNC a five-point cushion.
That lead was quickly erased when NC State picked up six points with an injury default at 157 to take a 10-9 lead. No. 13 Keegan Mueller gave Carolina the lead back with a 2-0 win over Obie Simpson at 165 but that was the last win for the Tar Heels on the night, as NC State won the final four bouts to even the season series at one win each. Mueller's victory was his team-best 25th of the season against just six losses.
Carolina is back in action Feb. 18 against VMI and The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
