Tar Heels in Fifth after Day One at ACC Championship

CHARLOTTE, NC - The North Carolina women's golf team fired a twelve-over 300 on the first day of the ACC Women's Golf Championship which puts them in fifth place. Duke, the number one team in the nation, leads after the first day after shooting one-under 287. Duke leads Florida State by three, after the Seminoles shot two-over par 290. Wake Forest and Virginia are in a tie for third, ten strokes behind Duke after shooting a nine-over 297. The Tar Heels round out the top five after shooting twelve-over.
Senior Kate Miller from Jeannette, Pa. was the top Tar Heel carding an even par 72 and is tied for fifth. The two Sophomores on the team, Sydney Crane and Lauren Hunt, each fired three-over 75 and are tied for 13th. Ann Laney shot six-over on the day and finished tied for 26th. The final Tar Heel, Kate Thomas, finished ten-over and is tied for 34th. Although the Tar Heels struggled, coach Sally Austin stayed optimistic saying, "We're disappointed in the way we played, but we're still within reach and we're confident we will bounce back tomorrow."
Florida State's Caroline Westrup fired the best round of the day, a six-under 66 with five birdies on the back nine. Rachel Smith of Virginia is two strokes behind her after shooting four-under par. Duke's Amanda Blumenherst and Jennie Lee are in third and fourth place after carding two-under 70 and one-under 71 respectively. Duke's Anna Grzebien, UNC's Katie Miller, and Wake Forest's Maggie Simons are tied for fifth after shooting even par.
The three-day tournament continues with the second round Saturday at the par-72 Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, NC. A Carlyle Cup point will be awarded to the team that finishes higher in the ACC tournament between North Carolina and Duke. Duke currently leads 9.5 to 8.5.
