CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The North Carolina rowing team faced its toughest competition of the spring season Saturday at the Knecht Cup and came away with encouraging finishes in racing on the Cooper River. "We had very good races in the finals and felt like we learned a lot about how to stay focused against stiff competition," UNC coach Sarah Haney said.
The regatta schedule called for racing on Saturday and Sunday, but the threat of inclement weather on Sunday forced all racing to take place on Saturday.
The UNC varsity eight won its petite final with a time of 7:05.5, ahead of Dayton and Buffalo. The Tar Heels won their morning heat then finished fourth in their semifinal to earn a spot in the petite final.
Racing in the Carolina varsity eight were Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Lisy McIntee, Maegan Wareham, Adriann Spinks, Megan McMullin, Mary Sasson, Christin Cotten, Megan Mitzel and Ruby Woodside.
The second varsity eight took third in its petite final with a time of 7:20.2, behind Buffalo and Boston College. Carolina was fourth in its morning heat. Racing in the second varsity eight were Emily Zepeda (coxswain), Chandler Sours, Elizabeth Gardiner, Emily Williams, Maeghan Sill, Priscilla Poor, Katie Wood, Kathryn Winz and Eugenia Delbono
The novice eight was second in its petite final, finishing behind Connecticut in a time of 7:27.3. Racing in that boat were Paige Wall (coxswain), Kallie Knop, Kendra Radkowski, Kasey Munson, Leigh Habegger, Whitney Hileman, Andi Drabot, Molly Tesch and Diane Reynolds.
The Tar Heel second novice eight won its event in a time of 7:58.9. Racing in the UNC boat were Amy Dement (coxswain), Annie Baer, Allie McCoy, Molly Jones, Lindley Barrow, Suzanne Ploeger, JoAnne Rogers, Carly Dressler and Emily Schultz.
UNC's novice fours finished first (UNC A) and fourth (UNC B) in their respective heats, but their times were not fast enough to advance into the finals. In UNC's "A" boat were Emilie Moseley (coxswain), Baer, Barrow, Ploeger and Rogers. In the "B" boat were Hope Newton (coxswain), Schultz, Brittni McCrimmon, Ashley Rumple and Sarah Dowd.
Carolina had planned to race two varsity fours, but those boats were scratched after the racing schedule was reworked.
The UNC men's club team also competed, finishing third in the novice eight grand final and fourth in the varsity eight petite final.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the ACC Championship on Saturday at Clemson.
