Senior right-hander Robert Woodard tossed his third career complete-game shutout and equaled Carolina's career wins record with his 30th victory Friday against Duke. Woodard improved to 30-3 in his collegiate career to equal Michael Hoog's school record established from 1987-90.
Now 7-0 in his final campaign, Woodard scattered a career high-tying nine hits and one walk over his fifth career complete game. He struck out four and fielded his position well, recording three assists and the game-ending putout on a liner off the bat of Jimmy Gallagher in the ninth. The Charlotte Myers Park product located 85 of his 118 pitches for strikes and picked up the final two outs of the seventh and the first two outs of the eighth on just four pitches.
Woodard, who lowered his ERA to 1.98 on the season, is just the 19th pitcher in ACC history to win 30 games and he moves into a tie for second in league history with his .909 winning percentage.
Woodard is third in the league in ERA, third in innings per start (6.56), third in opponent batting average (.212) and tied for first in shutouts and complete games.
North Carolina went 3-1 on the week and sits 32-6 through 38 games this season. The Tar Heels are 13-5 in ACC action and continue to lead Virginia and Georgia Tech in the Coastal Division. This weekend's series between North Carolina and Florida State will feature the league's division leaders and two of the top five-ranked teams in the country.
The Tar Heels won their sixth consecutive series from Duke with a pair of victories last weekend. Carolina has won 17 of its last 19 meetings with the Blue Devils and Saturday's loss was its first to Duke since 2004.
Carolina defeated 25th-ranked Charlotte Tuesday by a 6-3 score to move to 6-2 against nationally-ranked opponents this season.
Sophomore second baseman Garrett Gore led Carolina with a .556 average (5-9) and five runs scored on the week. He started all three games against Duke and matched career highs with three hits and three runs scored in the series opener. He also added two hits and two RBI in the rubber game Saturday. Gore is now batting .377 (26-69) with 13 RBI on the year.
Junior third baseman Chad Flack continued to put his season back on track with a .375 (6-16) week at the plate. He connected on his second home run of the season and the 30th of his career in Friday's win over Duke. Flack is batting .234 (32-137) with 24 RBI.
Freshman Dustin Ackley saw his 28-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-5 effort in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with Duke. He bounced back with two hits in the second game of the twin bill and is tied for the ACC lead with a .467 (70-150) average and a league-best 49 RBI. Ackley's hitting streak is the third longest in UNC history and a school record for a freshman. He is also just 13 RBI shy of the Carolina rookie RBI record set by Tim Federowicz a year ago.
Junior outfielder Seth Williams led the Tar Heels with six RBI on the week, all over a two-game span. He lifted UNC to a 6-3 win over Charlotte with a three-run, walk-off home run Tuesday and also drove in three runs in the 7-0 win over Duke Friday. Williams hit .333 (5-15) and is now batting .300 (33-110) on the season.
Sophomore right-hander Adam Warren made his first career ACC start and earned the win in the series-clincher with Duke. He allowed just three hits over five innings and struck out five. Warren is now 7-0 on the year with a 2.13 ERA over 38 innings. He has struck out 34 and 16.
