CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After escaping with a road win over UNC Wilmington earlier this year, North Carolina hosts the Seahawks in the second and final game of the season series Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels (25-5) have won four straight over UNCW (14-17), including the 6-5 victory Feb. 21 in Wilmington.
Carolina will start sophomore right-hander Adam Warren, a winner of five straight midweek starts. He is 5-0 on the year with a 1.67 ERA, which would lead the ACC if he had enough innings to qualify. Warren has fanned 27 in 27 innings, while walking only 13. He is holding opponents to a .225 average.
UNCW will turn to freshman right-hander Ryan Doolittle, who is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA over 17 2/3 innings. He has made six appearances, including three starts. The opposition is hitting Doolittle at a .382 clip.
The Tar Heels are batting .320 as a team, led by freshman first baseman Dustin Ackley, who is batting .475 with an ACC-best 40 RBI. He carries a 22-game hitting streak into Tuesday's game. Sophomore catcher Tim Federowicz is on a 10-game hitting streak and has lifted his average to a career-best .374. He is second on the team with 29 RBI.
The Seahawks are hitting .281 as a team and are led by Steve Halford's .359 average. Jonathan Batts is UNCW's top run producer with five homers and 27 RBI.
In the February meeting at Brooks Field, Mike Facchinei held the Seahawks to just one hit over six-plus innings, and Seth Williams hit a key two-run home run for Carolina. The Tar Heels, who own a 44-12 lead in the all-time series, held a 6-2 lead heading to the ninth, but UNCW scratched out three runs before UNC closed out the one-run victory.
After Tuesday's game, the Tar Heels make their first-ever road trip to Boston College for a three-game beginning Thursday.
