UNC Women's Golf Team Gets Bid To NCAA East Regional

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team was one of 21 teams to receive a bid to participate in the NCAA East Regional. The 54-hole event will be played May 10-12 at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La., which features a par 72, 6,403-yard layout.
In addition to the 21 teams, three individuals received a bid to play in the regional. The top eight teams and top two individuals not on those eight teams will advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 22-25 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. Tee times begin at 8:00 p.m. May 10th off both the 1st and 10th tees.
"We're excited to be going to the East Regional in Baton Rouge," says North Carolina head coach Sally Austin. "We like that golf course, play it well, and expect great results there."
Seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams received bids to extend their seasons. Duke is the top-seeded team in the East Regional which will also feature Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia, Florida State and NC State. Maryland will play in the Central Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Carolina, ranked 17th in both the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and the Golf World/NGCA Coaches' Poll, was the runner-up at two tournaments this past year, the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C., and the Chrysler Challenge in Destin, Fla. The Tar Heels finished third at the Bryan National Collegiate and carded fourth-place finishes at the ACC Championship in Charlotte, N.C., The Derby Invitational in Auburn, Ala., and the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill.
Sophomore Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., has carded eight top-25 finishes this year for the Tar Heels. She was the individual champion of the Cougar Classic, tied for runner-up honors at The Derby Invaitional and tied for fourth place at the Bryan National Collegiate. Katie Miller, a senior from Jeannette, Pa., has carded six top-25 finishes. She finished third at the Chrysler Challenge and carded seventh-place finishes at the ACC Championship and The Derby Invitational. Miller is a recipient of one of the ACC's 2007 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarships.
This marks Carolina's 14th appearance in the NCAA East Regional. Since the regional format was instituted in women's golf in 1993, the Tar Heels have received a bid in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998. 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007.
The complete list of teams participating at the East Regional are as follows (by seed): Duke, UCLA, Auburn, Purdue, Texas A&M, North Carolina, Alabama, Wake Forest, South Carolina, Virginia, Florida State, Louisiana State, Louisville, South Florida, NC State, Birmingham-Southern, Furman, College of Charleston, Western Carolina, Jacksonville State and Jackson State. The three individuals receiving bids in the East are Aruka Felgueroso of Coastal Carolina, Lene Krog of East Carolina and Amanda Mathis of Mississippi State.
