CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - With inclement weather forcing the match indoors, the No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels pushed their overall record to 19-0, 7-0 in ACC play, Saturday afternoon at the Cone Kenfield Tennis Center with a 5-2 victory over the Boston College Eagles. The doubles point and four singles wins propelled the Tar Heels to their 19th straight win of the season and fourth straight victory over Boston College. The 19-0 start to the season is the best start since Don Skakle's 1965 squad went 20-0.
Victories from all three positions in doubles gave Carolina the lead entering singles action. Sebastian Guejman and Tristan Heinrich, who played in his first dual doubles and singles match of the season, were off the court first after an 8-6 win over Thomas Nolan and Geoff Mueller. Lenny Gullan and David Stone clinched the doubles point at the one position with an 8-5 triumph over Alex Rastorgouev and Sam Wagner. The duo improved to a 19-10 overall record with the win. Winning the tiebreak at the three seed, Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney finished the sweep of the Eagles in doubles action. Fogleman and Kearney defeated Soma Kesthely and Brian Garber, 8-7 (8-6); the Tar Heel duo's record improved to 17-1 overall, 6-1 in dual match play.
Guejman and Rastorgouev were both forced to retire from their matches at the three and four seeds, respectively. Fogleman led Rastorgouev at the four seed before the Eagle retired, giving North Carolina a 2-0 margin. Heinrich, playing at the six position, gave the Tar Heels a 3-0 cushion when he defeated Dennis Reardon, 6-2, 6-4. Guejman's retirement at the three seed against Thomas Nolan gave Boston College its first point, the match score then stood at 3-1. No. 63 Benjamin Carlotti, playing at the two seed, clinched the North Carolina victory over Sam Wagner. Carlotti's 6-4, 6-1 win pushed his record to 19-12 overall.
Junior Will Plyler earned his second dual match singles win at the five seed. Plyler downed Brian Garber in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, pushing Carolina's lead to 5-1. Boston College's second point came from a match-tiebreak victory at the one seed. No. 121 Chris Kearney, who moved up to the one position for the first time, fell to Soma Kesthely despite winning the first set, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.
Head Coach Sam Paul was very pleased with the win and looks forward to upcoming competition. "Boston College played hard," said Paul. "You have to give them credit. We look forward to tomorrow's match."
The Tar Heels face a quick turnaround as they host the No. 55 Maryland Terrapins Sunday afternoon. Maryland is 10-7 overall and 2-6 in ACC action. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
