Carolina Golfers Tied For 11th Place At NCAA East Regional

Baton Rouge, La. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team played steady golf and stands tied for 11th place going into the final round of the NCAA East Regional. Carolina fired a four-over-par 292 for a 582 total, 18 strokes behind leader UCLA, at The University Club which features a par 72, 6,403-yard layout.
"We hit the ball extremely well, but just didn't make enough putts," said Carolina head coach Sally Austin. "We've just got to get the ball in the hole quicker."
The Tar Heels have been consistent, but need to move up in the standings on Saturday in order to continue their season. The top eight teams and top two individuals not on those eight teams will advance on to the NCAA Championship to be played May 22-25 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Two Tar Heels, Lauren Hunt and Kate Thomas, are tied for 20th place at even par 144. Hunt, a sophomore from Little River, S.C., fired a one-over 73 on Friday while Thomas, a freshman from Bathurst, Australia, carded a 74. The other three Tar Heels are tied for 62nd with 149 totals. Senior Katie Miller, from Jeannette, Pa., fired an even par 72 in the second round while sophomore Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., posted a 73 and junior Ann Laney, from Charlotte, N.C., carded a 76.
UCLA fired a five-under 283 for a 12-under 564 total to hold on to its first-round lead of the 21-team field. Wake Forest fired its second consecutive four-under 284 to remain in second place with a 568 total. Top-ranked Duke returned to form firing a seven-under 281, the day's low round, for a 572 total to jump into third place. Furman is in fourth place at two-under 574 while three teams are deadlocked in a tie for fifth place with one-under 575 totals - Purdue, Auburn and Louisville. Alabama is eighth at 576 while South Carolina and Texas A&M are tied for ninth at 579. The Tar Heels are tied with host LSU for 11th place with 582 totals.
Sydnee Michaels of UCLA grabbed the individual lead after firing a four-under 68 for a 10-under 134 total. Nannette Hill of Wake Forest is two strokes back in second place with a 136 total after carding a two-under 70 while Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville is third at seven-under 136 after firing a four-under 68. Five players are tied for fourth place with six-under 138 totals - Furman's Kathleen Ekey, Coastal Carolina's Aruka Felgueroso, Auburn's Nicole Hage, UCLA's Tiffany Joh and Florida State's Caroline Westrup.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Saturday at The University Club. Tee times begin at 9:00 EDT with the Tar Heels starting at 10:00 EDT off the 10th tee. Live scoring is available on TarHeelBlue.com and Golfstat.com.
