COLLEGE PARK, Md. - ehind two home runs from left fielder Reid Fronk and a homer and three RBI from shortstop Josh Horton, No. 3 North Carolina scored eight times over the first two innings and held on for a 12-4 win over Maryland in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at Shipley Field. The Tar Heels (44-11, 20-9 ACC) also got seven strong innings from freshman right-hander Alex White to secure their sixth straight series win over the Terrapins (26-29, 7-22 ACC).
Fronk, who was 3-for-4 with solo home runs in the second and seventh innings, now has a team-best 10 home runs, including seven in the last 10 games. He reached base five times and also singled and scored in the first to finish the day with three runs and two RBI.
Horton, who was 2-for-5 with the three runs driven in, added his eighth homer for the Tar Heels, who have now gone deep 20 times in the last 10 games. Designated hitter Kyle Seager matched a career high with three hits, and first baseman Dustin Ackley, who has 99 hits on the season, tallied two base hits and two runs scored to push his hitting streak to 11 games.
White (5-4) earned his first win since April 7 with seven strikeouts over seven innings. He walked just one and allowed three runs on eight hits. Classmate B.J. Dail allowed one unearned run over the final two innings.
Maryland righty Ryan Moorer (3-6) was not helped by his defense, as three Maryland errors led to six unearned runs. He went 4 2/3 and allowed nine runs (three earned) on 11 hits and two walks. Right fielder A.J. Casario had three hits to lead the Terps at the plate.
The Tar Heels sent 17 men to the plate over the first two innings and jumped on the Terps for eight runs. RBI by Horton, right fielder Tim Fedroff and third baseman Chad Flack and a two-run throwing error by Maryland shortstop Dan Melvin gave Carolina a five-run cushion in the first.
Fronk then led off the second with a solo home run to right and a second Terp error led to two more unearned runs. After the miscue put runners on the corners, Horton drove in his second run with a single to right, and Fedroff followed with an RBI groundout to drive in his second run of the afternoon and give the Tar Heels the 8-0 lead.
After Maryland put two runs on the board on three straight two-out hits in the fourth, the Tar Heels extended their lead to seven once again on a Seth Williams RBI double in the fifth. The Terps answered with a solo home run by Melvin to cut the lead to 9-3 through five complete.
Solo shots from Fronk and Horton in the seventh and eighth innings and a run-scoring single by second baseman Garrett Gore in the ninth closed the scoring for Carolina, which pounded out 16 hits.
