UNC Golfers Finish 21st At NCAA Championship

The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a 319 in the final round of the NCAA Championship for a 1248 total to finish in 21st place at LPGA International's Legends Course. Duke topped the field of 24 teams with an 1170 total for the Blue Devils' third consecutive national championship.
"We're disappointed," said Tar Heel head coach Sally Austin. "We're a better team than we showed. We should have played better, but just didn't make shots we're capable of making."
The Tar Heels were led in the final round by sophomore Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., who fired a four-over-par 76 for a 313 total to tie for 81st place. Katie Miller, a senior from Jeannette, Pa., carded a 79 for a 316 total to tie for 93rd place. Freshman Kate Thomas, from Bathurst, Australia, tied for 76th with a 312 total although she struggled Friday posting an 84. Lauren Hunt, a sophomore from Little River, S.C., finished with a 317 total to tie for 95th place after carding an 83 while Ann Laney, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., shot 81 for a 321 total to tie for 101st place.
Duke's two-over-par 290 in the final round was the low round of the day and put them 18-over for the tournament at 1170. Purdue was the runner-up finishing a distant 15 strokes behind the Blue Devils at 1185. UCLA finished one stroke behind the Boilermakers with an 1186 total. Southern California finished in fourth place with an 1196 total while Stanford finished fifth at 1197, Vanderbilt finished sixth at 1200, Pepperdine seventh at 1202, Georgia eighth at 1205, Auburn ninth at 1213 and Louisville 10th at 1214.
Stacy Lewis of Arkansas fired a six-under-par 66 in the final round to capture the individual title with a six-under 282 total. Christel Boeljon of Purdue and Paola Moreno of Southern California tied for runner-up honors four strokes back with two-under 286 totals. Boeljon carded her first over-par score of the tournament, a 76, while Moreno posted a one-under 71. Duke's Amanda Blumenherst fired an even par 72 for a one-over 289 total to finish in fourth place. UCLA's Tiffany Joh finished in fifth place with a 291 total while Duke's Anna Grzebien finished sixth at 292, Duke's Jennie Lee finished seventh at 294 and UCLA's Hannah Jun placed eighth with a 295 total. Vanderbilt's Jacqui Concolino and Stanford's Lauren Todd tied for ninth place with 296 totals to round out the top 10.
