INDIANAPOLIS - With the ACC's Coastal Division title and its first trip to the league championship game since 1990 under its belt, the University of North Carolina has been selected as one of 16 regional host sites for the 2007 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, the NCAA announced Sunday. The Tar Heels, who will host a regional for the second straight season and just the third time in program history, will find out who will join them next weekend at Boshamer Stadium when the 64-team field is announced on ESPN's selection show at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
Play begins Friday, June 1, and runs through Sunday, June 3. A seventh game would be played Monday, June 4, if needed.
"We are very excited to host a regional in front of our home crowd at Boshamer Stadium once again," said ninth-year head coach Mike Fox. "We had great fan support last year and we hope Tar Heel fans will come out to see some great baseball and create a real home-field advantage, which is extremely important in the postseason. This regional is a reward for continued hard work by our players, coaches and support staff. Hosting for the second straight season is just another step in building Carolina baseball into one of the top programs in the country."
Tickets for the event are available only to Rams Club members and past baseball ticket purchasers until Tuesday at 5 p.m. The ticket office is closed on Memorial Day. Eligible purchasers should call the Carolina ticket office at 1-800-722-4335 beginning Tuesday morning. Any unsold tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Tuesday at 5 p.m. Tickets will be available on an all-session basis only until 1 p.m. Thursday, when individual game tickets as well as all-session tickets will be available.
All-session reserved bleacher seats are $50 for adults and $35 for students (age three through college age). All-session general admission standing room tickets on the grassy hill are $40 for adults and $25 students. When individual game tickets go on sale Thursday at 1 p.m., reserved bleacher seats are $10 for adults and $7 for students. Individual game general admission standing room tickets on the grassy hill are $8 for adults and $5 for students.
The all-session pass does not include a ticket to the potential seventh game Monday, June 4. If a seventh game is necessary, a separate individual game ticket will be needed. No outside food or beverages will be allowed in the stadium.
Gates will open two hours before the first game each day, and the stadium will be cleared between games per NCAA regulations. Parking will be available in the Ramshead Deck for $5 per day and at the Smith Center at no charge.
The Tar Heels went 31-7 in Chapel Hill this season and lost just one weekend series at Boshamer Stadium, the home of Carolina Baseball since 1972. The 2007 postseason will mark the final games played at the current stadium, as construction is set to begin June 15 on a new home for the Diamond Heels. Boshamer also hosted a regional in 1983.
Carolina was one of three ACC schools chosen as sites, joining Florida State and Virginia. Arizona State, Arkansas, Coastal Carolina, Long Beach State, Missouri, Ole Miss, Rice, San Diego, South Carolina, Texas, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Wichita State were also selected as hosts.
The winners of the 16 regionals will meet June 8-11 in the best-of-three Super Regional round to determine the eight-team field of the 2007 College World Series, set for June 15-25 in Omaha, Neb.
