A pair of University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players have earned All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse, the magazine announced this week. Senior defender Jenn Cook was named to the first team while sophomore defender Amber Falcone was a second-team pick.
Pennsylvania coach Karin Brower was named Coach of the Year. Virginia's Brittany Kalkstein was named Rookie of the Year, Johns Hopkins' Mary Key was named Attacker of the Year, Northwestern's Kristen Kjellman was the Midfielder of the Year, Northwestern's Christy Finch was Defender of the Year and Northwestern's Morgan Lathrop was Goalie of the Year.
Cook also earned first-team All-America accolades from the IWLCA and womenslacrosse.com in 2007. Falcone was a third-team All-America choice by the IWLCA. Both were All-Atlantic Coast Conference choices this spring.
Cook is a three-time first-team All-America defender and is one of just three Tar Heels in school history to earn All-ACC honors three times. She was regarded as one of the top on-ball defenders in the country and was the anchor of a Tar Heel defense that ranked third in the nation in goals allowed in the latest NCAA statistics. Named the National Defender of the Year by Inside Lacrosse in 2006, Cook led the ACC and was 11th nationally in ground balls this year with over three per game and leads Carolina in draw controls (46) and caused turnovers (30). Cook finished her career as UNC's all-time leader in ground balls and her 71 career games started are second in school history.
Falcone is Carolina's top mark-up defender, matching up with top scorers from opposing teams. Falcone limited Blair Weymouth of Virginia to zero goals and one assist earlier this season, held Krista Pelizzi of Maryland to one goal and zero assists and limited Tewaaraton nominee Kjellman of Northwestern to one goal and zero assists. Falcone was named a third-team All-America as a freshman last year and All-ACC this spring.
